Rob's DAW Ka-6

South Dakota modeler and flying friend, Rob Hurd, kit bashed our popular 3-meter Ka6 foamie. The results were nothing less than spectacular. Photos don’t really do justice to what a great looking model Rob created.

The fuselage and wings look like they are fiberglass, not EPP foam. Rob achieved these results without spackle or tape on the fuselage. That’s right, his fuselage was not taped. Instead, Rob made a carbon tube by spiral wrapping it around a mandrel. The tube forms a backbone stiffener that eliminated the need for the filament tape that normally helps supply the stiffness to the fuselage. This carbon tube runs from the servo compartment in the front of the fuselage all the way back to the tail stiffener.

Rob sliced the fuselage lengthwise to create a two-piece (left and right side) fuselage. This allowed him to imbed the tube inside the fuselage.

Flaps were added to improve landings. They also are used for thermaling and launching.

The wings are taped without overlapping the seams. This takes some skill but the results are worth the effort.

Other modifications include two Hitec HS 125 servos mounted in the back of the fuselage just in front of the tail group. One operates the rudder and the other the elevator. This eliminates the need for using the Lazer rods that run from the front of the fuselage to the rear. It also makes for a very precise and slop free control set up.

The switch harness is under the canopy and the battery is placed in the nose as far forward as a four cell, sub-c battery pack can go.

Rob’s model is finished in a very hot red UltraKote with hand cut lettering. As you can see in the photos it makes this bird easy to see when it is specked out. The wings are black on the bottom with bold hand cut white letters and numbers.

As soon as the clear canopies are available Rob will swap the EPP canopy for the clear one.

All I can say is WOW!  Nice job, Rob.
